Matawa Education and Care Centre (MECC)

Matawa Education and Care Centre is a holistic education and care centre located in Thunder Bay that incorporates mental health services, recreation opportunities, trades programming, land-based learning, distance and cooperative education, cultural and spiritual programming into an 11 hour school day, offering a multi-faceted learning environment capable of adapting to meet the individual needs of each First Nations student.

First Nations of Matawa took ownership of a long-term care facility as part of a path of reconciliation between the City and the Matawa First Nations.  The facility is currently being converted from its former use as a long-term care facility into a school and accommodations centre that will facilitate living spaces for 115 students who must leave their homes to pursue secondary school education.

MECC is now the second facility in Canada that offers education and accommodations to First Nations students that must leave home to continue with their secondary studies.
